# Male child victims of sexual abuse to be included in victim compensation fund: Maneka Sanjay Gandhi Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, Union Minister of Women and Child Development, on May 30, 2018 urged the States and UTs to issue necessary directions to the concerned departments for including male child victims of sexual abuse in the Victim Compensation Schemes or Funds. The Minister also urged that the compensation including the interim compensation should be given to the victims on time. As per National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) data, though 31 State Governments have notified their Victim Compensation Scheme under Rule 7 of POCSO Rules, 2012, the disbursements of compensation has not been satisfactory. # International Conference on the TRIPS CBD Linkage to be held on 7-8 June in Geneva The International Conference on TRIPS- CBD Linkage will be held in Geneva on June 7-8, 2018 to revive WTO discussions on issues related to theft of traditional knowledge. The conference will be organised jointly by Indian Government, Centre for WTO Studies, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and the South Centre, an inter-governmental organisation based in Geneva. • The international conference will bring together indigenous people and communities in developing and developed countries; internationally acclaimed academicians; Geneva-based negotiators; and capital based experts. # Explained: Renaming of US Pacific Command as US Indo-Pacific Command The Trump administration on May 30, 2018 renamed the US Pacific Command to US Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM), recognising the increasing connectivity between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, The announcement was made by the US Defence Secretary James N. Mattis during the change of guard ceremony at Joint Base Pearl Harbour in Hawaii, wherein Admiral Phil Davidson replaced Admiral Harry Harris as Commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command. The move is reflective of the growing importance of the Indian Ocean in US strategic thinking. It also recognises India’s growing role in providing regional security. # Government, World Bank sign agreement worth $500m for PMGSY rural roads project The Union Government on May 31, 2018 signed a $500 million loan agreement with the World Bank to provide additional financing for the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) Rural Roads Project. The project, implemented by the Union Rural Development ministry, aims to build 7,000 km of climate resilient roads, out of which 3,500 km will be constructed using green technologies. The PMGSY has over the years brought about a paradigm shift in the way rural roads are mapped, designed, monitored and built, involving communities especially women. # Andhra Pradesh gets separate state symbols post split The state of Andhra Pradesh has notified its separate state symbols post-split and creation of Telangana in 2014. The move comes four years after unified Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated into two states- Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in June, 2014. The most notable change was in the symbol of the state bird. While the state bird of undivided Andhra Pradesh was Indian Roller or Palapitta, the bifurcated Andhra Pradesh changed it to Rama Chiluka or rose-ringed parakeet.
